Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again Tonight, Ash Column Reaches Approximately 1,000 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Thursday (29/8/2024) at 00:50 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 14 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to reach 1,000 meters above the peak (2,584 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 14.8 millimeters and a duration of 302 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on August 29, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WITA showed 4 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 5.1-9.62 millimeters and durations of 129-557 seconds.

Then, there were 8 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2.96-6.6 millimeters and durations of 85-448 seconds, and 6 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.22-5.18 millimeters and durations of 21-224 seconds.

PVMBG advises people around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 3,201 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,230 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 562 times.
