According to a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia's Gini coefficient, a measure of income inequality, stood at 0.381 in September 2022.
The Gini coefficient is measured on a scale of 0 to 1. A value closer to 1 indicates higher inequality, while a value closer to 0 suggests lower inequality or near-equal distribution.
The highest inequality in September 2022 was found in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DI Yogyakarta), with a Gini coefficient of 0.459, exceeding the national figure.
The Gini coefficient in DI Yogyakarta increased by 0.023 points compared to March 2022 and by 0.020 points compared to September 2021. Compared to September 2019, before the pandemic, the inequality figure also increased by 0.031 points.
The provinces with the next highest levels of expenditure inequality in September 2022 were Gorontalo (0.423), Jakarta (0.412), West Java (0.412), Papua (0.393), West Papua (0.384), Banten (0.377), West Nusa Tenggara (0.374), West Sulawesi (0.371), and Central Java (0.366).
Nationally, Indonesia's inequality figure in September 2022 decreased by 0.003 points compared to March 2022. However, it remained stagnant compared to September 2021.
