Mount Dempo Erupts on Saturday Afternoon, Alert Level Remains at Waspada

Mount Dempo in South Sumatra erupted again on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 1:38 PM WIB. In the past week, Mount Dempo had only erupted once.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height was approximately 200 meters above the peak, or 3,373 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the north. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 30 millimeters and a duration of 240 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Dempo's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on November 23, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIB showed 1 instance of an emission earthquake with an amplitude of 4 millimeters and a duration of 7 seconds. Then, 1 instance of continuous tremor with an amplitude of 1-3 millimeters, predominantly 1 millimeter.

PVMBG advises that the public, visitors/tourists should not approach or stay overnight (camping) within a 1-kilometer radius of the Marapi-Mount Dempo crater's activity center, and within a 2-kilometer radius to the north sector of the crater opening, considering the crater as the center of eruption and volcanic gases that can be hazardous to life.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,343 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (2,172 eruptions), while Mount Dempo erupted 4 times.
