Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Saturday, January 11, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at 21:57 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 55 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to reach 400 meters above the peak (1,725 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the north and northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 64 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on January 11, 2025, from 12:00 to 18:00 WIT showed 21 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 7-28 millimeters and durations of 24-75 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 4 rockfall quakes with amplitudes of 2-3 mm and durations of 26-52 seconds, and 50 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-7 millimeters and durations of 22-49 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 245 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (157 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 79 times.
