Warning! Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Morning (Wednesday, January 14, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Wednesday (Jan 14, 2026) at 10:23 AM Western Indonesian Time (WIB). In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 25 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column reached None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

The visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 115 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on January 14, 2026, from 00:00-06:00 WIB showed 40 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 11-22 millimeters and durations of 48-128 seconds.

Additionally, there were 4 rockfall earthquakes with amplitudes of 3-6 mm and durations of 39-52 seconds, and 1 exhalation earthquake with an amplitude of 7 millimeters and a duration of 42 seconds.

PVMBG urges people not to carry out any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, people should not engage in activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks (river borders) along Besuk Kobokan as there is a potential for expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 202 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions, with 114 occurrences.
