Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight, Ash Column Reaches 400 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Monday, March 17, 2025, at 9:21 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 9 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 400 meters above the peak or 1,725 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the south. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 58 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on March 17, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIT showed 28 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 12-28 millimeters and durations of 25-73 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 40 tremor events with amplitudes of 2-9 millimeters and durations of 17-42 seconds, and 9 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-28 millimeters and durations of 44-159 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,257 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,033 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 911 times.
