Reports of Alleged Violations of the Code of Ethics and Conduct of Judges to the KY Increased in the Third Quarter of 2023

The Judicial Commission (KY) received 1,592 reports from the public regarding alleged violations of the code of ethics and conduct of judges from January to September 2023.

In addition, 1,062 carbon copy letters were received concerning the same issues, along with requests for trial monitoring.

"From January to September 2023, the Judicial Commission received a total of 2,654 reports from the public," said Joko Sasmito, Head of the Judge Supervisory and Investigative Agency, in an online press conference on Friday, November 3, 2023.

Joko stated that this represents an increase from the 1,158 reports received in 2022.

Based on the type of case, civil cases dominated with 844 reports. This was followed by criminal cases with 397 reports and corruption cases (tipikor) with 71 reports.

Furthermore, there were 62 reports of state administrative cases (TUN), 61 religious cases, and 41 commercial cases.

Meanwhile, reports related to Industrial Relations Court (PHI) cases, tax, environmental, military, sharia, and other cases had fewer numbers, as shown in the attached graph.

By region, reports regarding alleged violations of ethics and conduct of judges originated from DKI Jakarta, with 313 reports. This was followed by East Java and West Java, with 167 and 138 reports respectively.

The KY admitted to monitoring several cases that have attracted public attention. These include the Unila Rector corruption case, the Kanjuruhan Stadium football riot case, and the judicial review request by Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono against the Presidential Staff Chief, Moeldoko.

"We only conduct monitoring if there are allegations of ethical violations, public attention, and media attention," Joko explained.

He stated that the KY has limited human resources and budget, and therefore cannot monitor every report submitted by the public.
