Warning! Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again This Afternoon (Friday, August 29, 2025)

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Friday (29/8/2025) at 16:44 WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 5 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column reached 500 meters above the peak or 1,923 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to grey with moderate intensity moving westward. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 3.4 millimeters and a duration of 51 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia''s volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on August 29, 2025, from 06:00-12:00 WITA showed 5 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 4.1-9.7 millimeters and earthquake durations of 31-43 seconds.

Subsequently, 21 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.4-4.6 millimeters and durations of 27-40 seconds, and 1 hybrid/multiphrase earthquake with an amplitude of 1.6 millimeters, s-p 1.5 seconds, and a duration of 14 seconds occurred.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok as well as visitors/climbers/tourists not to enter and not to engage in activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok''s activity, to be aware of the potential danger from lava falls/landslides and pyroclastic flows from the Southern and Southeastern sectors, the Western sector, and the Northeastern sector of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,881 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,355 times), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 250 times.
