The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded 98,090 divorce cases in West Java throughout 2021. This comprised 23,980 cases of *cerai talak* (divorce initiated by the husband) and 74,110 cases of *cerai gugat* (divorce initiated by the wife).
Divorce cases in West Java surged by 161% compared to the previous year, representing the highest number among all provinces.
The province with the next highest number of divorce cases was East Java, with 88,240 cases. This was followed by Central Java (75,510 cases), North Sumatra (17,270 cases), and Riau (12,720 cases).
Other provinces with significant numbers of divorce cases included Jakarta (16,020 cases), Banten (15,670 cases), South Sulawesi (15,580 cases), Lampung (15,030 cases), Riau (12,720 cases), and South Sumatra (11,190 cases).
A total of 447,740 divorce cases were recorded nationwide in 2021, a 53.5% increase compared to the previous year. Of these, 337,340 were *cerai gugat* and 110,400 were *cerai talak*.
