Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Afternoon (Sunday, January 4, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Sunday (1/4/2026) at 4:18 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 36 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

The eruption visual was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 23 millimeters and a duration of 119 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on January 4, 2026, from 06:00-12:00 WIB showed 33 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 11-23 millimeters and durations of 61-124 seconds.

Subsequently, there were 12 blast earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-8 millimeters and durations of 37-66 seconds, as well as 2 harmonic earthquakes with an amplitude of 2 millimeters and durations of 251-388 seconds.

PVMBG urges people not to carry out any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, people should not conduct activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks (river boundaries) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 60 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has erupted the most with 36 explosions.
