Lewotolok Volcano Erupts on Saturday Afternoon; Status Remains on Alert

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 4:06 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 16 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 200 meters above the peak or 1,623 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with moderate intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 5.2 millimeters and a duration of 41 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on February 22, 2025, from 00:00 to 23:59 WITA showed 5 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 5.1-8.5 millimeters and durations of 33-57 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 62 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 1-4.6 millimeters and durations of 20-60 seconds, and 1 local tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 2.6 millimeters, S-P 6.7 seconds, and a duration of 27 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, not to enter or carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and that the residents of Lamatokan and Jontona villages should remain vigilant against the potential dangers of lava collapses/landslides from the eastern part of the peak/crater of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,494 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (721 eruptions), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 16 times.
