Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight, Ash Column Reaches Approximately 5,000 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday (June 9, 2024) at 6:01 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 11 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to reach 5,000 meters above the peak or 6,325 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with moderate to thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption of Mount Ibu was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level IV (Alert). Seismic observations on June 9, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 18 puffing events with amplitudes of 2-15 millimeters and durations of 20-50 seconds.

Then, there were 10 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-14 millimeters and durations of 32-70 seconds, and 62 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-12 millimeters and durations of 10-22 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral extension of 7 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 949 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (384 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 113 times.
