Mount Ibu Erupts on Monday Afternoon; Status Raised to Highest Alert Level

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Monday, June 3, 2024, at 1:47 PM WIT. This is the second eruption in the last week.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the eruption was not visually observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 186 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's alert level is at Level IV (Awas - Warning). Observations of seismic activity from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT on June 3, 2024, showed 33 instances of tremor with amplitudes of 2-11 millimeters and durations of 14-50 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 3 millimeters and a duration of 71 seconds, and 183 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-10 millimeters and durations of 4-16 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral extension of 7 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 884 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (361 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 104 times.
