The number of poor residents in DKI Jakarta increased as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that the percentage of poor people in Jakarta, DKI Jakarta, increased to 4.69% of the total population in September 2020. This percentage has been steadily rising over the past year due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In March 2020, the percentage of poor people in DKI Jakarta was 4.53% of the total population. This increased by 15,980 people to 496,840 in September 2020.

From 2017 to 2019, the percentage of poor people in DKI Jakarta remained around 3%. In September 2019, for example, it was 3.42%.

However, BPS considers the increase in the percentage of poor people in DKI Jakarta from March to September 2020 to be relatively small, as the increase was only 0.16%. Furthermore, deflation in the food commodity group of -0.495% is considered to have helped ease the burden of consumption expenditure.

On the other hand, various social assistance programs disbursed by the Central Government and the Provincial Government have contributed to maintaining the stability of consumption among the poor and near-poor. Therefore, the increase in the percentage of poor people in DKI Jakarta was not significant.
