Prevalence of Early Marriage Among Indonesian Women in Early 2025

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), among Indonesian women aged 10 years and above who have ever been married as of March 2025, 13.21% first married at the age of 16 or younger.

These women who married at an early age are more commonly found in rural areas, with a proportion of 16.9%, compared to 10.55% in urban areas.

When viewed by province, the highest number of women who married at an early age is in South Kalimantan.

The following are the 10 provinces with the highest percentage of women aged 10 years and above who first married at an early age (16 years or younger) as of March 2025:

1. South Kalimantan: 20.16%
2. East Java: 18.24%
3. West Java: 16.50%
4. Jambi: 16.01%
5. Central Kalimantan: 16%
6. Central Java: 15.15%
7. West Nusa Tenggara: 15.09%
8. Bengkulu: 15.06%
9. South Sulawesi: 14.02%
10. West Sulawesi: 13.99%

Meanwhile, there are only 4 provinces with a percentage of women aged 10 years and above who first married at an early age (16 years or younger) below 5%, namely:

1. Bali: 4.83%
2. North Sumatra: 4.16%
3. Riau Islands: 4.08%
4. East Nusa Tenggara: 3.94%

BPS defines marriage ('kawin') as the status of a person living as a husband or wife based on legal/customary/religious regulations, whether with a marriage certificate or not, but recognized as valid according to law/custom/religion.

The 'married' category also includes those who have a partner without being legally bound in a formal marriage (customary, religious, state), but who have a relationship like husband and wife, whether living together or not.
