Trend of Provincial Growth in Indonesia 1955-2025

According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), from 1955 to 2025, the number of administrative regions in Indonesia has experienced very rapid growth.

The number of provinces, for example, in 1955, Indonesia was recorded as having 10 provinces. A decade later, the number increased by 15 provinces to 25 provinces.

From 1965 to 1995, or during the New Order era, the number of provinces in Indonesia increased by 2, reaching 27 provinces.

Meanwhile, from 1995 to 2025, or during the Reform era, the number of provinces increased by 11, totaling 38 provinces.

If calculated from 1955, then in the last 70 years, the number of provinces in Indonesia has increased by 28.

The increase in the number of provinces was also accompanied by an increase in the number of cities, regencies, districts, and villages/urban villages.

The number of cities, for example, in the last 70 years, increased by 60 cities, from 38 cities in 1955 to 98 cities in 2025.

Regencies increased by 252, from 164 regencies in 1955 to 416 regencies in 2025.

Meanwhile, the number of districts increased by almost 3.5 times compared to 1955, reaching 7,285 districts in 2025.

While the number of villages/urban villages rose by 77.65% compared to 70 years ago, reaching 83,762 villages/urban villages in 2025.
