Update: Death Toll from Late August 2025 Demonstrations in Indonesia Increases by Two

Large-scale demonstrations swept across Indonesia at the end of August 2025.

These protests, which were held to oppose government and House of Representatives (DPR) policies, escalated into riots, resulting in at least nine fatalities.

The following is a list of fatalities from the August 28-31, 2025 demonstrations, compiled from media reports as of September 2, 2025, at 1:10 PM:

1. Sarinawati, Makassar

Sarinawati was a staff member of the Makassar City DPRD. She died after being trapped in the Makassar City DPRD building, which was set on fire amidst the riot on Friday, August 29, 2025.

2. Syaiful Akbar, Makassar

Like Sarinawati, Syaiful Akbar died after being trapped in the fire at the Makassar City DPRD building. He was the Head of Social Welfare Section of Ujung Tanah Sub-district, Makassar.

3. Muhammad Akbar Basri, Makassar

Muhammad Akbar Basri, a photographer for the Makassar City DPRD's public relations department, also died in the fire at the Makassar City DPRD building. He is believed to have been trapped in the building while trying to escape the angry mob.

4. Rusmadiansyah, Makassar

Rusmadiansyah worked as an online motorcycle taxi driver (ojol). He died after being beaten by a mob who accused him of being an intelligence officer during the riot in front of the University of Muslim Indonesia campus, Makassar, on Friday, August 29, 2025.

5. Affan Kurniawan, Jakarta

Affan Kurniawan worked as an online motorcycle taxi driver (ojol). He died after being hit and run over by a vehicle belonging to the Indonesian Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob) amidst the riot in Bendungan Hilir, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

6. Andika Lutfi Falah, Jakarta

Andika Lutfi Falah, 16, a student from Tigaraksa, Tangerang Regency, Banten, reportedly died allegedly due to violence during the demonstration around the DPR/MPR Building, Jakarta, on Friday, August 29, 2025.

The student of SMKN 14 Tangerang Regency received intensive care at the Indonesian Navy Hospital Dr. Mintoharjo, Jakarta.

7. Sumari, Solo

Sumari worked as a becak (pedicab) driver. He died amidst the riot at Bundaran Gladak, Solo, on Friday, August 29, 2025.

8. Rheza Sendy Pratama, Yogyakarta

Rheza Sendy Pratama, a Communication Science student at Amikom University Yogyakarta, died in the riot in front of the Yogyakarta Special Region Police Headquarters (DIY), on Sunday, August 31, 2025.

As of Monday, September 1, 2025, the police have not yet investigated the cause of his death.

9. Iko Juliant Junior, Semarang

Iko Juliant Junior, a student of the Faculty of Law at Semarang State University (Unnes), died on Sunday, August 31, 2025, after being critically injured at Dr. Kariadi General Hospital, Semarang City, Central Java.

According to the chronology compiled by the Unnes Faculty of Law Alumni Association, Iko went to campus on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at 5:00 PM WIB.

Towards evening, he went home and was picked up by his friend at 11:00 PM WIB to go to the Central Java Police Headquarters to pick up his friend who was detained after the demonstration.

According to the Unnes Faculty of Law Alumni Association's investigation, Iko was taken to Kariadi Hospital in critical condition by the police at 11:00 AM on Sunday and died on the same day at 3:30 PM WIB.

The cause of Iko's death is unknown. Police said he was involved in an accident on Jalan Dr. Cipto, Semarang City. Other accounts state that while unconscious, the victim was heard mumbling for mercy and begging not to be beaten again.
