Child Abuse in Indonesia is Generally Intentional

According to the Indonesian National Criminal Information Center (Pusiknas) of the Indonesian National Police (Polri), between January 1 and July 21, 2025, there were 13,192 cases of crimes against children handled by the police in Indonesia.

These crimes against children include offenses related to child protection, child sexual abuse, child neglect, and crimes related to juvenile justice.

"The most prevalent offense is that of crimes against child protection, with 9,937 cases or 75.32% of the total number of crimes against children," as quoted from the Pusiknas Polri website (July 21, 2025).

Generally, the Polri categorizes 15 motives for crimes against children. The most frequently found motive is intentionality.

"In other words, the perpetrators intentionally committed these crimes against children," they stated.

"Since the beginning of the year, the motive of intentional crime has reached 59.61% of the total number of crimes against children," they continued.

The following is a list of the 5 most frequently found motives for crimes against children by the Polri between January 1 and July 21, 2025:

1. Intentional: 7,864 cases
2. Social problems: 1,402 cases
3. Misunderstanding: 1,105 cases
4. Revenge: 463 cases
5. Security disturbances: 280 cases

The following are the 5 regional police (Polda) that handled the most cases of crimes against children between January 1 and July 21, 2025:

1. West Java Regional Police (Polda Jawa Barat): 1,259 cases
2. North Sumatra Regional Police (Polda Sumatera Utara): 1,206 cases
3. South Sulawesi Regional Police (Polda Sulawesi Selatan): 1,127 cases
4. Jakarta Metro Regional Police (Polda Metro Jaya): 1,119 cases
5. East Java Regional Police (Polda Jawa Timur): 1,015 cases
