Global Public Opinion of Israel is Generally Negative

According to a Pew Research Center survey, a majority of people in many countries held negative views towards Israel in 2025.

This negative view was expressed by more than half of the respondents in Turkey, Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, and even the United States (US).

The countries whose citizens held the most negative views of Israel in 2025 were:

* Turkey: 93%

* Indonesia: 80%

* Japan: 79%

* Netherlands: 78%

* Sweden: 75%

* Spain: 75%

On the other hand, the countries whose citizens held the most positive views of Israel in 2025 were:

* Nigeria: 59%

* Kenya: 50%

* US: 45%

* Hungary: 36%

* South Africa: 34%

* India: 34%

In total, from the 24 countries surveyed, the median proportion of global respondents viewing Israel negatively reached 62%, and positively 29%.

Previously, the Pew Research Center conducted a similar survey in 2022. Compared to that survey, negative views towards Israel this year tended to increase, including in the US.

"The number of adults (in the US) who hold negative views towards Israel rose by 11% between March 2022 and March 2025," said the Pew Research Center in its report (3/6/2025).

They also found that in several countries, younger people held more negative views than older people.

"This was particularly true in the high-income countries surveyed: Australia, Canada, France, Poland, South Korea, and the US. In fact, the US had one of the largest age gaps in views of Israel," it explained.

The Pew Research Center conducted this survey from January 8 to April 26, 2025, in 24 countries across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America. There were 28,333 respondents outside the US, and 3,605 in the US.
