Distribution of Judges in Indonesia by Judicial Institution 2024

The Supreme Court (MA) recorded a total of 7,890 judges in Indonesia as of 31 December 2024. This number includes 45 Supreme Court justices, 7,378 judges, and 467 ad hoc judges.

These judges serve in the Supreme Court, general courts, religious courts, military courts, and administrative courts.

Based on their distribution, the majority of judges in Indonesia serve in the general courts, both at the first-instance and appellate levels, with a total of 4,420 judges.

This is followed by the religious courts with 2,607 judges, the Supreme Court with 376 judges, the administrative courts with 319 judges, and the military courts with 168 judges.

The following is the distribution of judges in Indonesia by their place of assignment as of 31 December 2024:

General Courts

• First instance judges: 3,224
• First instance ad hoc judges: 350
• Appellate judges: 738
• Appellate ad hoc judges: 108
• Total: 4,420 judges

Religious Courts

• First instance judges: 2,181
• Appellate judges: 426
• Total: 2,607 judges

Supreme Court (MA)

• Supreme court justices: 45
• Judges: 322
• Ad hoc judges: 9
• Total: 376 judges

State Administrative Courts (TUN)

• First instance judges: 259
• Appellate judges: 60
• Total: 319 judges

Military Courts

• First instance judges: 140
• Appellate judges: 28
• Total: 168 judges

The MA stated that these judges are distributed across 930 court work units. The ideal distribution of human resources (judges) in relation to the number of cases is a key consideration in determining a rational ratio.

"The greater the number of cases received, the greater the workload and complexity of case handling," the MA stated in its report.
