Few Indonesian Teachers Receive Social Assistance, Here's the Source

According to a survey conducted by the Institute for Demographic and Poverty Studies (Ideas) and Great Edunesia, 36.7% of teachers in Indonesia have received social aid (bansos). Meanwhile, 63.2% have never received bansos.

Those who received bansos stated they received it from the central government, with the highest proportion at 35.8% of the total respondents receiving bansos.

Second, from the local government, with a proportion of recipients at 33.7%. Then the zakat institution, 14.2%.

The National Zakat Agency (Baznas) is also included in the list with 10.1% of recipients, and mosques at 4.7%. Other institutions account for 1.3%.

The proportion of teachers receiving bansos is smaller than those who have never received any. This remains a concern, because teachers, especially honorary teachers, should be more deserving of bansos.

Ideas researcher, Muhammad Anwar, assesses this is due to the commendable dedication of Indonesian teachers, which should be appreciated.

“Even with the low welfare of teachers, we see the dedication of Indonesian teachers is very commendable. This is evident from the 93.5% of teachers who want to continue serving and imparting knowledge as teachers until retirement,” said Muhammad Anwar in May 2024.

The survey was conducted on 403 teacher respondents in 25 provinces in May 2024, with 291 respondents from Java and 112 from outside Java. The survey respondents consisted of 123 civil servant teachers, 118 permanent foundation teachers, 117 honorary or contract teachers, and 45 PPPK teachers.
