Steps to Prevent Violence Against Women Due to Online Lending

Cases of violence against women due to online loans (pinjol) are frequent. The violence ranges from intimidation and verbal abuse to physical assault.

According to a Kompas Research and Development (Litbang Kompas) survey, improving women's welfare is the most important step to prevent this, as stated by 39.1% of respondents.

"Regardless, the majority of these borrowers take out loans due to pressing economic needs," wrote Litbang Kompas in its report on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

Furthermore, 22.5% of respondents believe the government should impose sanctions on lenders who resort to violence when collecting payments from borrowers.

Subsequent efforts to prevent women from becoming victims of violence due to online loans include improving financial literacy (19.4%) and strengthening regulations regarding loan collection (14.3%).

Litbang Kompas also found that 15% of respondents admitted to experiencing violence when loan collectors demanded payment.

This comprises 2.1% of female respondents who experienced it firsthand and 12.9% who experienced it through a female relative.

"Besides strengthening law enforcement against rogue online lenders, official complaint channels for violence related to online loans also need to be strengthened," wrote a Litbang Kompas researcher.

This survey involved 510 respondents from 54 cities across 38 provinces, selected randomly according to the population proportion in each region.

Data collection was conducted from April 21-24, 2025, through telephone interviews. The survey's margin of error is approximately 4.25% with a 95% confidence level, under conditions of simple random sampling.
