According to population data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs, East Java's population reached 41.64 million in mid-2024.

Surabaya City is the most populous area in East Java, with 3.01 million inhabitants (7.23%) of the total population.

This is followed by Malang Regency with 2.71 million inhabitants (6.51%), Jember Regency with 2.6 million inhabitants (6.24%), and Sidoarjo Regency with 2.0 million inhabitants (4.79%).

Meanwhile, Mojokerto City is the regency/city with the smallest population, at only 141,780 inhabitants (0.34%).

Administratively, East Java is divided into 9 cities and 29 regencies, with 31 districts comprising 153 urban villages.

Based on marital status, 51.56% of East Java's population is married, while 39.98% are unmarried. The population with divorced and widowed statuses reached 2.37% and 6.09%, respectively.
