Central Java Has the Village/Sub-district with the Highest Gotong Royong Culture in Indonesia 2023

According to a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), there were 84,276 villages/sub-districts spread across all Indonesian provinces in 2023.

Of that number, 72,177 villages/sub-districts have a predominantly communal spirit among their residents for public benefit. This represents 86% of the total number of villages/sub-districts nationally.

This mutual assistance practice is most prevalent in Central Java Province, with 8,183 villages/sub-districts.

Meanwhile, DKI Jakarta has the lowest number, with only 225 sub-districts exhibiting this communal practice. It is followed by Bangka Belitung Islands with 292 villages/sub-districts and Riau Islands with 373 villages/sub-districts.

The following is a list of the top 10 provinces with the highest number of villages/sub-districts exhibiting a strong culture of gotong royong (mutual cooperation) in 2023:

1. Central Java: 8,183 villages/sub-districts
2. East Java: 7,798 villages/sub-districts
3. Aceh: 5,737 villages/sub-districts
4. West Java: 4,908 villages/sub-districts
5. North Sumatra: 4,119 villages/sub-districts
6. East Nusa Tenggara: 3,324 villages/sub-districts
7. South Sulawesi: 2,592 villages/sub-districts
8. South Sumatra: 2,567 villages/sub-districts
9. Lampung: 2,406 villages/sub-districts
10. Papua Pegunungan: 2,296 villages/sub-districts

The BPS also recorded 869 villages/sub-districts without a communal spirit in 2023. This is most prevalent in North Sumatra, with a total of 150 villages/sub-districts.

This is followed by Central Papua with 145 villages/sub-districts, Papua Pegunungan with 103 villages/sub-districts, and Aceh with 74 villages/sub-districts lacking a communal spirit last year.
