10 Provinces with the Most Catholic Churches in 2022

Indonesian society showed considerable enthusiasm in welcoming the visit of the highest leader of the Catholic faith, Pope Francis. This enthusiasm wasn't limited to Catholics; it extended to followers of other religions as well.

Catholicism is the third largest religion in Indonesia. According to data from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, there were 13,968 Catholic churches throughout the country in 2022.

West Kalimantan had the highest number of Catholic churches, with 2,891 units in 2022. This figure represents 20% of the national total.

The provinces with the next highest number of Catholic churches are North Sumatra (2,439 units), followed by Papua (1,221), East Nusa Tenggara (1,089), East Java (603), and Central Java (565).

This is followed by South Sulawesi with 491 Catholic churches, Central Kalimantan with 438, and East Kalimantan and Lampung with 413 and 410 units respectively.
