A medical specialist training program (PPDS) participant at Diponegoro University's Faculty of Medicine was found dead on Monday (August 12, 2024), suspected to be a suicide.
According to Antara news agency, the PPDS participant died from a self-administered injection, and their body was found in a locked rented room.
This case highlights data from the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) regarding the tendency towards suicide among prospective specialist doctors.
Of approximately 12,000 PPDS participants examined by Kemenkes, 399 individuals (3.3%) reported feeling that they would be better off dead or wanted to self-harm in any way.
This phenomenon is not unique to Indonesia. According to the research report *Risks and Warning Signs for Medical Student Suicide Mortality* (February 2024), a similar phenomenon is found in many countries.
The report states, "Medical students are known to face many mental health problems. Medical students have been recorded as having high rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors."
According to the report, of the 98 sample cases of medical student suicides studied, the majority were related to stress or academic failure (59.2%).
There were also cases related to bullying or harassment (20.4%), and personal relationship problems (20.4%).
This data was collected from sample cases of medical student suicides in five countries: the United States, Canada, Japan, India, and Bangladesh during the period 1950-2022.
"There has been ample documentation that stress and anxiety stemming from academic studies are widespread among medical students," the report quotes.
"Medical schools may have a significant role to play in reducing suicide mortality among their students, such as through providing better support, curriculum changes, and accurate data collection," it continues.
Meanwhile, Into the Light, a community for suicide prevention education and mental health in Indonesia, advises individuals with suicidal thoughts to contact the nearest healthcare services.
"Meeting with the nearest psychologist/psychiatrist has proven effective in handling suicidal crises or mental disorders. Furthermore, face-to-face meetings with professionals will also guarantee the confidentiality of your personal information," said the Into the Light team on their website.
"One of the easiest ways to find mental health services is to visit the nearest community health center (Puskesmas). According to data from Kemenkes, there are now more than 3,000 Puskesmas equipped with mental health services," they stated.
