Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Morning (Sunday, June 9, 2024)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at 10:06 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 28 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the visual eruption was not observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru is still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations from June 9, 2024, 00:00-06:00 WIB, showed 29 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 15-23 millimeters and durations of 88-145 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 4 guguran (rockfall) quakes with amplitudes of 2-6 mm and durations of 59-96 seconds, and 5 emission quakes with amplitudes of 4-8 millimeters and durations of 49-70 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along the Besuk Kobokan river, up to 13 kilometers from the summit (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbanks (river margins) along the Besuk Kobokan river due to the potential for pyroclastic flow and lahar flows extending up to 17 kilometers from the summit.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 948 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has experienced the most eruptions, with 384 recorded events.
