Mount Marapi Erupts Again in the Early Hours of Today, Ash Column Reaches Approximately 1,000 Meters

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at 03:50 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). In the last week, Mount Marapi had only erupted once.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 1,000 meters above the peak (3,891 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the south. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 30 millimeters and a duration of 63 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on May 26, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIB, showed 2 instances of puffing earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.7-2.1 millimeters and durations of 29-122 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 3.6 millimeters, an s-p time of 1.3 seconds, and a duration of 20 seconds; and 2 local tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 3.2-5.7 millimeters, s-p times of 2.7-3.3 seconds, and durations of 20-23 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Marapi, as well as climbers/visitors/tourists, not to enter or carry out activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 804 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (322 eruptions), while Mount Marapi erupted 174 times.
