Mount Ibu Erupts Again in the Early Hours of Today, Ash Reaches Approximately 500 Meters High

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Thursday (29/8/2024) at 02.46 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 62 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 500 meters above the peak or 1,825 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 40 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on August 29, 2024, from 00.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 41 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 10-28 millimeters and durations of 38-198 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 62 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-24 millimeters and durations of 14-67 seconds, and 12 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-25 millimeters and durations of 31-184 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 3,203 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku has experienced the most eruptions, with 1,231 eruptions.
