Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Morning, Ash Column Reaches 1,000 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at 7:01 a.m. WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 4 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed at approximately 1,000 meters above the peak (2,584 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 10.5 millimeters and a duration of 312 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on October 22, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WITA showed 1 shallow volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 2.9 millimeters and a duration of 14 seconds.

Then, 1 deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 7.4 millimeters, s-p 2.1 seconds, and a duration of 14 seconds; and 2 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 5.9-14.8 millimeters, s-p 36.7-54.3 seconds, and durations of 128-132 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 4,523 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,838 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 818 times.
