Lewotobi Laki-laki Volcano Erupts Early Saturday Morning; Alert Level Raised

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at 03:05 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 25 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 400 meters above the peak or 1,984 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 47.3 millimeters and a duration of 414 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on June 15, 2024, from 18:00 to 23:59 WITA showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 47.3 millimeters and a duration of 290 seconds.

Then, there were 2 puffing earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.9-5.1 millimeters and durations of 10 seconds, and 1 low-frequency earthquake with an amplitude of 5.9 millimeters and a duration of 16 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and a sectoral 4-kilometer radius in the North-Northeast direction and a 5-kilometer radius in the Northeast sector.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,103 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (477 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 195 times.
