Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts on Thursday Night, Status is Alert

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Thursday (25/9/2025) at 21:22 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 49 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 1,200 meters above the peak (2,784 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 14.8 millimeters and a duration of 70 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level IV (Alert). Seismicity observations on September 25, 2025, from 12:00-18:00 WITA showed 3 emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 4.4-14.8 millimeters and durations of 31-58 seconds.

Furthermore, 7 non-harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 4.4-7.4 millimeters and durations of 87-289 seconds, and 4 low-frequency earthquakes with amplitudes of 4.4-7.4 millimeters and durations of 24-28 seconds occurred.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to engage in any activities within a 6-kilometer radius and a 7-kilometer sectoral area from the Southwest-Northeast of the Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki eruption center.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 6,335 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,492 times) while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 611 times.
