Warning! This Morning Mount Semeru Erupts Again (Monday, January 19, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Monday (1/19/2026) at 06:44 AM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 5 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column reached 700 meters above the peak or 4,376 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to grey with thick intensity towards the north and northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 136 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on January 19, 2026, from 00:00-06:00 WIB showed 36 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 12-22 millimeters and durations of 86-156 seconds.

Then, 3 avalanche earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-7 mm and durations of 33-73 seconds, and 3 harmonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-11 millimeters and durations of 118-360 seconds occurred.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, people should not engage in activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks (river boundaries) along Besuk Kobokan because of the potential for being affected by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 266 volcano eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has erupted the most with 151 occurrences.
