Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again Today, Volcanic Ash Reaches 400 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Tuesday (July 9, 2024) at 01.14 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 9 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 400 meters above the peak or 1,984 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 43.6 millimeters and a duration of 171 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on July 9, 2024, from 18.00 to 23.59 WITA showed 2 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 17-47.3 millimeters and durations of 223-241 seconds.

Then, there were 8 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 3.7-14.8 millimeters and durations of 7-10 seconds, and 1 deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 22.9 millimeters, s-p 1.2 seconds, and a duration of 14 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the North-Northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the Northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,529 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (674 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 323 times.
