Warning! Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Evening (Monday, November 18, 2024)

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Monday, November 18, 2024, at 5:01 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki had only erupted once.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed at approximately 1,500 meters above the peak (3,084 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray in color with moderate to thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level IV (Alert). Seismic observations on November 18, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 14 volcanic gas emissions with amplitudes of 5.9-29.6 millimeters and durations of 15-75 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 6 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 7.4-14.8 millimeters and durations of 192-466 seconds, and 2 non-harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 5.9-16.2 millimeters and durations of 144-594 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 7-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, and a sectoral 8-kilometer radius in the Southwest-Northwest direction.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,219 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (2,104 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 954 times.
