Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Morning, Ash Reaches Approximately 500 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at 06:28 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 10 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 500 meters above the peak (1,825 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with moderate intensity towards the northeast and east. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 5 millimeters and a duration of 82 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on July 10, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WIT showed 17 instances of tremor with amplitudes of 2-13 millimeters and durations of 17-68 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 3 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-4 millimeters and durations of 15-95 seconds, and 184 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-10 millimeters and durations of 10-21 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,553 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java experienced the most eruptions (686 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 213 times.
