The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has compiled data on lifetime inbound migration across all Indonesian provinces. BPS explains that inbound migration refers to the influx of residents into a destination province per 1,000 residents.
Based on the report, *Indonesia Migration Statistics: Results from the 2020 Population Census Long Form*, West Java recorded the highest number of lifetime inbound migrants from 2020-2022, reaching 5.18 million people.
Of this number, men constituted the majority at 2.67 million, while women accounted for 2.51 million.
The second highest number of inbound migrants was in DKI Jakarta, with 3.33 million people. Unlike West Java, female migrants dominated in DKI Jakarta, numbering 1.69 million, compared to 1.63 million men.
The third highest number was in Banten, with 2.3 million people, followed by Riau with 1.85 million and Lampung with 1.32 million in sixth place.
The graph shows that while the top three provinces are located on Java Island, inbound migration is also spread across other islands.
Citing *Kontan.co.id*, Ateng Hartono, Deputy for Social Statistics at the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), explained that the population census results from 1971 to the 2020 Long Form Census show a shift in inter-island migration in Indonesia, no longer concentrated on Java Island.
"We have noted that over the past five decades, migration flows have spread to areas outside Java and Sumatra, particularly towards Kalimantan Island," said Ateng at Menara Dana Reksa, Central Jakarta, Monday (30/1/2023).
