Warning! Mount Marapi Erupts Again Early This Morning (Tuesday, September 23, 2025)

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Tuesday (9/23/2025) at 02:59 AM WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi had only erupted once.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column reached None meters above the summit (None meters above sea level).

The visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 30.4 millimeters and a duration of 48 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia''s volcanic activity report, Mount Marapi''s activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismicity observations on September 23, 2025, from 00:00-23:59 WIB showed 1 puff earthquake with an amplitude of 6.2 millimeters and a duration of 27 seconds.

Subsequently, 3 non-harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 1-3.5 millimeters and durations of 82-590 seconds, and 3 hybrid/multiphasic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.2-6.8 millimeters (s-p unobserved) and durations of 16-36 seconds occurred.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Marapi and hikers/visitors/tourists not to enter and not to engage in activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of activity (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 6,284 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,475 times), while Mount Marapi erupted 102 times.
