According to a survey by the Ministry of Transportation through the Transportation Policy Agency (BKT), the number of people traveling during the 2023 Eid homecoming season is predicted to reach 123.8 million. The peak of this year's Eid is predicted to occur on Friday, April 21, 2023.
Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi stated that at the peak of the 2023 Eid homecoming, an estimated 17.7 million people will be traveling, or 14.3% of the total number of people traveling during this year's homecoming season.
“The increase in homecoming travel is predicted to start rising from three days before Eid (Wednesday, April 19, 2023). The peak of the return flow is expected to occur on the second day after Eid (Tuesday, April 25, 2023), and a fairly high volume of movement is predicted to continue until the third day after Eid (Wednesday, April 26, 2023),” said Budi, as quoted from a press release on Tuesday (October 7, 2023).
The survey also predicts that Central Java will be the most popular destination for the 2023 Eid homecoming this year, with 32.75 million people (26.45% of the total number of people traveling during this year's homecoming season).
East Java ranks second as the most popular homecoming destination this year, with 24.6 million people (19.87%). This is followed by West Java with 20.72 million people (16.73%), Jabodetabek with 8.07 million people (6.52%), and Yogyakarta with 5.9 million people (4.78%).
On the other hand, the Kemenhub survey also predicts that the origin of the 2023 Eid homecoming travel will be dominated by the island of Java, with 77.3 million people (62.5% of the total number of people traveling during the 2023 Eid homecoming).
The five regions with the highest number of homecoming travelers are: East Java with 21.2 million people (17.1%), Central Java with 18.7 million people (15.1%), Jabodetabek with 18.3 million people (14.8%), West Java with 14.9 million people (12.1%), and North Sumatra with 4.4 million people (3.6%).
The Kemenhub survey predicts that land transportation will dominate movement during this year's homecoming. The majority of people are predicted to use private cars, with 27.32 million people (22.07%), followed by motorcycles with 25.13 million people (20.3%), buses with 22.77 million people (18.39%), intercity trains with 14.47 million people (11.69%), and rental cars with 9.53 million people (7.7%).
