Warning! Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Afternoon (Monday, December 30, 2024)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Monday, December 30, 2024, at 4:56 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 11 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

The eruption was not visually observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 102 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on December 30, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIB showed 59 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 11-23 millimeters and durations of 65-192 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 pyroclastic flow eruption quake with an amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 217 seconds, and 3 rockfall quakes with amplitudes of 3-11 mm and durations of 57-113 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 8 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river boundary) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for pyroclastic flow expansion and lava flows up to 13 kilometers from the peak.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia recorded 6,197 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (2,546 eruptions), while Mount Semeru erupted 2,254 times.
