Prevalence of Inadequate Food Consumption in Buton Decreased by 5.06% in the Last Year

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that the prevalence of undernourishment (PoU) in Buton Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, was 15.7% in 2023.

This figure is down 5.06% from the previous year's 20.76%, while it has increased by 7.21% over the past five years.

The average PoU in Indonesia was 8.53% in 2023. This means that the PoU in Buton Regency is higher than the national average.

According to the National Food Agency (Bapanas), PoU is a condition where a person regularly consumes an insufficient amount of food to meet the energy needs for a normal, active, and healthy life. This indicator can be used as a tool to assess food and nutrition insecurity.

This means that the percentage of residents in Buton Regency who consume food but whose energy needs are unmet does not reach 15.7% of the total population.

Compared to 16 other regencies/cities in Southeast Sulawesi Province, Buton Regency ranks 16th in terms of PoU. The area with the lowest PoU (highest ranking) is North Konawe Regency (5.56%), and the highest (lowest ranking) is Central Buton Regency (17.56%).
