Mount Ibu Erupts Again Today, Volcanic Ash Reaches 700 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday (November 6, 2024) at 8:53 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 34 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed at approximately 700 meters above the peak or 2,025 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the south. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 49 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on November 6, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIT showed 30 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 9-28 millimeters and durations of 24-77 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 14 rockfall quakes with amplitudes of 2-6 mm and durations of 12-42 seconds, and 39 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-28 millimeters and durations of 22-64 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 4,834 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku has erupted the most, with 1,951 eruptions.
