Warning! Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Evening (Sunday, January 19, 2025)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Sunday (19/1/2025) at 3:08 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 118 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed at approximately None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

The eruption was not visually observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on January 19, 2025, from 00.00 to 23.59 WIB showed 76 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 12-22 millimeters and durations of 80-194 seconds.

Then, there was 1 rockfall earthquake with an amplitude of 8 mm and a duration of 60 seconds, and 15 emission quakes with amplitudes of 2-8 millimeters and durations of 36-90 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river buffer zone) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for pyroclastic flow and lava flows extending up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 500 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has experienced the most eruptions, with 267 eruptions.
