Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Monday, February 17, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Monday, February 17, 2025, at 8:32 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 19 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 600 meters above the peak (1,925 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 114 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on February 17, 2025, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 27 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 7-28 millimeters and durations of 30-79 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 24 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-5 millimeters and durations of 33-39 seconds, and 6 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-14 millimeters and durations of 19-322 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,344 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (672 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 581 times.
