Mount Ibu Erupts on Monday Afternoon; Activity Level at Alert Status

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Monday, December 30, 2024, at 1:51 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 5 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 600 meters above the peak or 1,925 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 83 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on December 30, 2024, from 00.00 to 06.00 WIT showed 20 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 18-28 millimeters and durations of 32-79 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 48 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-14 millimeters and durations of 25-65 seconds, and 3 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 4-13 millimeters and durations of 26-93 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia recorded 6,196 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions, with 2,546 eruptions.
