Java Island remained the favorite destination for domestic tourists in 2022. This aligns with findings from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS).
BPS stated that domestic tourist trips aimed at Java Island reached 75.49% of the total domestic tourist trips in Indonesia.
East Java was recorded as the main destination province in 2022 with the highest number of trips, namely 200.55 million or 27.29% of the total domestic tourist trips.
"This number of trips increased by 26.07% compared to the previous year," wrote BPS in its report.
Furthermore, West Java and Central Java were also favorite destinations for domestic tourists with the number of trips reaching 123.53 million trips (16.81%) and 110.35 million trips (15.02%), respectively.
"These three provinces have always been the main destinations for domestic tourist trips," said BPS.
The fourth destination was DKI Jakarta with 56.01 million trips. Banten followed in fifth place with 38.6 million trips. The rest is included in the graph.
BPS explained that the pattern of domestic tourist trips in 2022 experienced a structural change compared to the pre-pandemic conditions.
In 2019, West Java was the main destination province for domestic tourist trips, followed by Central Java and East Java.
The opposite condition occurred in 2022. East Java became the main destination for domestic tourist trips, followed by West Java and Central Java.
"The distribution of domestic tourist destinations is seen to be more towards the western and central regions of Indonesia compared to the eastern region of Indonesia," said BPS.
Based on regencies/cities, Surabaya City, Malang Regency, and Sidoarjo Regency were the areas in East Java Province that were most visited by domestic tourists.
Meanwhile, the areas most visited by domestic tourists in West Java Province were Bogor Regency, Bandung City, and Bekasi City.
In addition, Semarang City, Surakarta City, and Banyumas Regency were the areas in Central Java Province that were most visited.
