Parents are the Most Frequent Perpetrators of Physical Violence Against Children in Riau

Physical violence against children remains prevalent in Riau. According to a survey by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), 14.29% of children and adolescents under 18 experienced physical violence from their own parents.

Of this number, 22.86% of the physical violence against children occurred because the child misbehaved or was disobedient. Furthermore, 4.76% of physical violence against children was attributed to household economic problems.

Next, 0.95% of physical violence against children occurred because parents were under the influence of alcohol/drugs. Meanwhile, 3.81% was due to other factors.

Besides parents, 8.57% of physical violence against children in Riau was perpetrated by peers. Other reasons include 5.71% by family members, 1.90% by teachers, and 0.95% by step-parents.

Physical violence against children in Riau most frequently occurred at home (19.05%). Meanwhile, 5.71% occurred at school, and 4.76% occurred in other locations.

The BPS conducted this online survey from June 8-30, 2021. The survey involved 313 respondents, but only 133 were children under 18 who completed the survey, and only 105 respondents had complete data allowing for further analysis.
