National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA): 3,547 Cases of Child Abuse Reported in 2023, with Sexual Violence Being the Most Prevalent

The Indonesian National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA) reported receiving 3,547 complaints of child abuse throughout 2023. These complaints were gathered through various channels, including direct reports, hotline services, and electronic messages. This figure represents a year-on-year increase.

"Compared to the previous year, this year has seen a 30% increase," said Acting Chairperson of Komnas PA, Lia Latifah, in a virtual press conference on Thursday, December 28, 2023.

The most prevalent type of abuse was sexual violence, with 1,915 complaints received this year.

"Some of the backgrounds of sexual violence cases are due to watching pornography," said Lia.

This was followed by physical violence with 985 cases and psychological violence with 674 cases.

Based on the location of the incidents, the majority of child abuse cases (35%) occurred within the family environment. This was followed by incidents in school environments (30%), social environments (23%), and unspecified locations (12%).

In response to the high number of child abuse cases, Komnas PA implemented several preventative measures. One such measure involved providing educational seminars to 21,150 children across Indonesia.

Furthermore, Komnas PA also conducted parenting programs for 3,600 parents.

"Resolving issues involving children is our priority. Therefore, we provide education not only to children but also to parents," said Lia.
