The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has compiled data on lifetime outward migration across all Indonesian provinces. BPS explains that the outward migration figure represents the number of migrants leaving a province per 1,000 inhabitants of that province.
In its report, *Indonesia Migration Statistics: Results from the 2020 Population Census Long Form*, Central Java is recorded as the province with the highest number of outbound migrants or residents, totaling 5.99 million people per 1,000 inhabitants in 2020-2022.
This migration figure is dominated by men, reaching 3.08 million, while women account for 2.91 million.
East Java is second, with 3.47 million outbound migrants. This movement is dominated by men (1.83 million), while women account for 1.63 million.
Jakarta follows in third place, with 3.05 million outbound migrants. This figure includes 1.56 million men and 1.49 million women.
West Java and North Sumatra occupy the fourth and fifth positions, with 2.45 million and 2.31 million people respectively.
BPS notes that this migration data does not include movement abroad.
Citing *Kontan.co.id*, Ateng Hartono, Deputy for Social Statistics at the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), explains that several factors hinder migration flows in Indonesia. These include a lack of attraction, limited connectivity, and high transportation costs.
He believes that accelerated development is necessary, especially in eastern Indonesia, to create new magnets to attract migrants and optimize population distribution.
The long-form census is a continuation of the 2020 Population Census. Data collection was conducted in May-June 2022. This program involved 78,000 field officers surveying 4.29 million households and 268,000 census blocks.
