Mount Semeru Erupts in the Early Hours of Sunday, Status Remains on Alert

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at 03:37 WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 50 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed at approximately None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

The visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 124 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on December 22, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIB, showed 61 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 11-22 millimeters and durations of 62-159 seconds.

Then, there were 2 pyroclastic flow quakes with amplitudes of 3-5 mm and durations of 44-67 seconds, and 4 tremors with amplitudes of 3-8 millimeters and durations of 46-58 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 8 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Outside this distance, people should not carry out activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (riverbed) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for expansion of pyroclastic flows and lava flows up to 13 kilometers from the peak.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia recorded 6,023 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (2,490 eruptions), while Mount Semeru erupted 2,147 times.
